The Burrito is your ring, will you marry me?

I don’t know who was more excited for this wedding, the bride or me! Shannan and David booked me at the end of 2020 and as one of my #jenjensenbrides she has been amazing! I think she has a gift of encouragement because all along as we approached their wedding day I could not out-encourage her. She is one of those brides photographers dream of having! I have wanted to shoot at Brule River Barn for probably 8 years and when I knew that was the venue, I almost wanted to pay her to let me be the photographer!

Shannan & David’s engagement session was in Duluth and they were amazing! They relaxed quickly and trusted me completely. We connected well and they learned their posing amidst lots of laughter and sharing! We founds bits of light on a beautiful day in several locations and shot all the way past the sunset and were surprised by a full moon over Lake Superior. We took selfies and headed in opposite directions. That was April.

We were all so excited to see each other this past September Saturday! I couldn’t wait to meet their daughter! Well, sadly, I haven’t seen them yet. Insert sobbing face! The Thursday before the wedding I was sick…first I thought it was bad allergies, then a cold, then maybe it was the flu…but…Friday I felt better so I thought I would pay for a rapid test so I could tell people (if they asked) that I just had a cold, not Covid. Yep, you guessed it. My test was positive. I actually just sat in the car looking at my email in shock. I actually didn’t believe it (I am fully vaccinated and a bunch of other reasons I had in my silly head, like my blood type and the vitamins I was taking, that convinced me I couldn’t get it)…so I paid for my husband and my oldest son to get tested as well. If there wasn’t another positive, then mine was a mistake so I was NOT telling my bride and groom until I knew for sure. In the waiting time I called a new photographer I had met this past Spring whom had been on my mind all day Thursday, to see if she could cover for me if needed. SHE COULD!!! I had someone who shot very much like me, to cover for me if needed. Well, Liam, who had the same symptoms as me, tested positive as well.

After working up the courage, I called Shannan. I was so grateful that I had not yet broken down and cried and was not a blubbering mess for that phone call. I confidently and reassuringly told Shannan that it would all be okay and it was. Amy of Amy Gregg Photography did an amazing job with the help of someone wonderful Shannan knew named Marlee Lehr. When I heard that Marlee shot Nikon (Amy shoots on Canon), my super (not sick) husband not only delivered cards for Amy to shoot on but my camera gear for Marlee to use as well. Amy’s husband Caleb was careful to wipe down all my equipment before anyone else used it. Amy & Marlee have thousands of amazing photos that I am culling through and will edit. Usually, my plan includes about 100 wedding photos for the blog as a sneak peek. Today though, you get to read about Shannan and David, their fun burrito proposal story and get to see over 200 photos from their amazing day at the Brule River Barn in Brule, Wisconsin.

So tell me! How did you propose? - me

“With a Burrito.” - David

Wait! Like the ring was IN the burrito?? -me

“Nah. I just gave her a bag of diamonds.” - David

Okay, Shannan, what’s the real story? - me

“David came home from Duluth after a day of hanging out with his buddy. It was March 24th, the day before my 30th birthday. I was STARVING at the time and he was bringing home Chipotle (my favorite). He had to drop his buddy off at his house so I was waiting anxiously. He got home and gave me a card and asked if I wanted my gift. The card said “taco bout a celebration!” on the front. He got down on one knee and put my burrito in my hand and said “the burrito is your ring, will you marry me?”. I said “what?” I thought he was joking. He said it again “the burrito is your ring, will you marry me?”. I said “yes, if you are being serious?” And we celebrated for a few minutes. He gave me some diamonds that were his great aunts and we were going to make a ring together with them (the center diamond on my ring is from those). He then went outside and talked to our neighbor for a while and I ate my burrito very confused hahaha. He came in and we called our parents and then I knew it was official. The man of my dreams. He’s my person.” - Shannan

Shannan & David met on the dating app called Bumble. Their first date was at the Angry Minnow in Hayward, Wisconsin. They love to laugh and love taco night! :) They love comfort food and clothing, fires on summer nights, the beach, and watching their daughter grow.
